Streaming channels have become internet staples today. However, choosing the most suitable can be problematic since many offer similar content. As a homebody who was often glued to my PC and TV screen (I now prefer a Seedbox), one comparison I’m frequently asked about is Fubo vs YouTube TV.

Fubo and YouTube TV (not to be confused with YouTube) are streaming services that provide a convenient way to cut the cord without losing access to popular channels. However, each service has its unique strengths that appeal to different types of viewers.

Fubo was initially launched with a strong focus on sports content, making it a go-to option for sports enthusiasts. Although its offerings have expanded, its sports coverage (including regional sports networks) remains a key selling point. 

On the other hand, YouTube TV provides a more balanced offering. It has almost anything the average couch potato would want. More significantly, Google’s web expertise has allowed it to craft an intuitive, clean interface and offer better integration within the Google ecosystem.

The cost of streaming platforms is always a contentious issue. Comparing premium platforms like Fubo vs YouTube TV typically finds one commonality—they’re expensive. However, in this comparison, we see that Fubo offers greater flexibility.

• Pro Plan: This plan, Priced at $74.99 per month, includes 170+ channels and 1,000 hours of cloud DVR storage. 
• Elite Plan: At $84.99 monthly, the Elite Plan upgrades the channel lineup to over 240 channels and includes Fubo Extra for more sports, news, and entertainment channels. 
• Premier Plan: For $94.99 per month, the Premier Plan adds access to premium networks like Showtime and offers over 250 channels.
• Latino Plan: This plan, priced at $32.99 per month, is tailored for Spanish-speaking audiences and offers 50+ channels and 250 hours of DVR storage.

b. YouTube TV Plans and Pricing

YouTube TV is more consumer-friendly for general streamers since it offers a single all-in-one plan for $72.99 per month. It comes with 100+ channels and unlimited cloud DVR storage, allowing you to save as many shows as you’d like for up to nine months.

a. Fubo Streaming Content

Fubo offers a substantial selection of over 170+ channels in its basic Pro plan, scaling up to more than 250+ channels in its Premier plan. Even more significant is its sports coverage, which can offer access to Regional Sports Networks (RSNs).

b. YouTube TV Streaming Content

While offering fewer channels, YouTube TV still provides over 100+ channels in its base plan. Its well-rounded selection includes sports, news, and entertainment, with networks like ESPN, CNN, AMC, and NBC.

4. Streaming Quality & Device Compatibility

Fubo and YouTube TV offer reliable, high-quality streaming experiences and device compatibility, but some differences are worth noting.

a. Fubo Platform Experience

Fubo delivers streaming up to 4K resolution for select sports and on-demand content. However, not all live broadcasts are available in 4K; the highest resolution often depends on the event or channel.

Access to the platform is available on a wide range of devices, including smart TVs, streaming sticks (like Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV), game consoles (like Xbox), mobile devices, and web browsers​. 

b. YouTube TV Platform Experience

YouTube TV offers 1080p HD streaming for most content and 4K resolution for select channels. However, 4K streaming is only available with the 4K Plus add-on. 

You also get broad device compatibility. You can watch YouTube TV on almost anything, including smart TVs, streaming devices (Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, and Fire TV), gaming consoles (Xbox and PlayStation), mobile devices, and browsers. 

5. DVR & Recording Features

Both Fubo and YouTube TV offer cloud DVR functionality, allowing you to record live TV shows, sports events, and movies to watch later. However, there are distinct differences:

• Fubo: You only get 1,000 hours of recording time, but recordings will never expire.
• YouTube TV: The platform provides unlimited recording hours. However, recordings can only be kept for nine months. 

Note: Too much of a good thing isn’t necessarily better. In the past, I’ve found myself recording everything on YouTube TV and simply never managing the recordings. It’s also a pain to find a needle in this haystack.

Fubo offers a well-organized interface that divides the home screen into various sections. Veteran traditional cable TV users will be familiar with the grid-style guide. 

The app also performs well on most devices, being fast and responsive. However, minor glitches have been reported, such as buffering issues or delays when switching between channels. 

b. YouTube TV User Experience

YouTube TV, by contrast, is known for its clean, minimalist interface. Its design is simple, with a clear focus on ease of navigation. One key strength is its search functionality, which is powered by Google (no surprises here). 

The live TV guide on YouTube TV is also easy to use. Its traditional grid-style layout lets you see what’s airing and coming up next. The library tab organizes your recordings neatly, allowing you to sort them by type, date, or channel.

7. Fubo vs YouTube TV Sports Streaming

Fubo and YouTube TV offer excellent sports coverage. However, one critical difference that may give Fubo an edge is RSNs.

a. Fubo Sports Coverage

Fubo has long positioned itself as a go-to service for sports lovers. Initially launched focusing on soccer, Fubo expanded to cover almost all major US sports leagues. This includes the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and college sports. 

In addition, Fubo excels in providing access to international sports like soccer from the Premier League, La Liga, and Champions League, along with other niche sports like rugby, cycling, and tennis.

b. YouTube TV Sports Coverage

YouTube TV also provides robust sports coverage, though it takes a more balanced approach. There is undoubtedly enough, though, thanks to the inclusion of essentials like ESPN, FS1, NBC Sports, and CBS Sports.

However, while YouTube TV covers major sports, its offerings regarding international sports and niche leagues are less extensive than Fubo’s. It also has a relative shortcoming due to its limited provision of RSN streams.

Fubo and YouTube TV offer free trials and occasional special deals, making it easier for new users to test their services before committing to a subscription. However, it’s important to note that each service limits availability to specific geographic areas.

• Fubo is available in the United States, Canada, and Spain. It typically offers a 7-day free trial for new users. Special promotions, such as discounts on the first month of service, are also occasionally offered.
• YouTube TV is only available in the United States and provides a 7-day free trial. Occasionally, it extends its free trial to 14 days during special promo periods. 

9. Final Thoughts

Choosing between Fubo vs YouTube TV is a matter of preference rather than platform capabilities. Both offer excellent advantages, albeit at a price. Still, the prices are lower than those of subscribing to a dozen platforms.

For dedicated sports fans, Fubo’s access to RSNs is often a dealbreaker that tips things firmly in its direction. However, movie fans generally prefer the usability and experience of YouTube TV. 

I’m less of a couch potato now as life has gotten in the way. Because of this, I’ve dumped streaming platforms in favor of torrents via Seedbox.
